A newly introduced bill aims to make “catfishing” illegal in Wisconsin.

The legislation would make it a misdemeanor to use a fake persona on social media with the intent to threaten, harass, or defraud someone.

Wisconsin lawmakers say its current law is outdated as it only penalizes impersonating someone through email.

Those found guilty could face a $1,000 fine or 90 days in jail.

Officials expect the bipartisan legislation to pass both chambers.

About a dozen states are said to already have similar laws in place.
