Former President Barack Obama has jumped into the Alabama special election with a robocall intended to reach African-American voters, according to a CNN report out Monday.

“Doug Jones is a fighter for equality, for progress,” Mr. Obama says in the recording. “Doug will be our champion for justice. So get out and vote, Alabama.”

The report said Mr. Obama recorded the call in the past few days.

African-American turnout is key for Mr. Jones, the Democratic candidate in Alabama Senate race, along with younger voters, in order for him to be competitive in the deep-red state.

Roy Moore, the Republican candidate, has been accused of sexual misconduct by several women. They claim that he pursued physical relationships with them as teens when he was an man in his 30s.

The allegations have given Democrats some hope to claim the seat in a state they otherwise may not be competitive in.

The race is set for Tuesday.
