The Department of Justice is weighing whether to bring federal charges against the illegal immigrant who murdered Kate Steinle after he was acquitted of murder and manslaughter charges.

According to a DOJ official, the department could file federal charges against Jose Garcia Zarate for illegal re-entry into the U.S.

In the meantime, Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway brought renewed attention to the “No Sanctuary for Criminals Act” during an interview Friday.

The bill, which has already been approved by the House, would deny federal funding to sanctuary cities that Conway argued is necessary to keep foreign criminals out of the U.S.

Meanwhile, President Trump spoke out on the outcome of the Steinle murder trial, calling the verdict a complete travesty of justice.

In an Friday morning tweet, the president said Jose Garcia Zarate repeatedly entered the U.S. illegally through the weakly protected Obama border.

He added, the man had a history of committing violent crimes, but the information was not used in court.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions also opposed the verdict, calling out California’s sanctuary city policies.

sessions said, “When jurisdictions choose to return criminal aliens to the streets — rather than turning them over to federal immigration authorities — they put the public’s safety at risk.”

President trump called the outcome disgraceful, and said he understood why Americans are so fed up with illegal immigration.
