Gina Haspel Nominated for CIA Director, First Woman to Head the Agency

Another historic first for the Trump administration as the president nominates the first woman to serve as director of the CIA.

He nominated Deputy Director Gina Haspel to head the agency after he tapped current Director Mike Pompeo to head the State Department.

President Donald Trump tweeted March 13, 2018, that he would nominate CIA Director Mike Pompeo to be the new secretary of state and that he would nominate Haspel to replace him. Haspel has more than 30-years with the agency, including extensive overseas experience. She is also a recipient of the Presidential Rank Award.

She said she is grateful to President Trump for the opportunity, and humbled by his confidence in her ability to lead the agency.

Haspel will need to be confirmed by the Senate before taking the position.
