Hundreds of Marines and Israeli troops trained together Monday in a mock Middle East village at base in Southern Israel.

The exercise is part of the annual week-long Juniper Cobra drill, which is focusing on urban and tunnel warfare this year.

Service members rehearsed battle formations, helicopter deployment, and medical evacuations.

Marine Corps officials say its critical for troops to receive training advice from U.S. sergeants and Israeli instructors.

U.S. troops say Israeli forces offer expertise that differs from the American military, especially in terms of tunnel warfare. The U.S. troops haven’t encountered tunnel warfare since the Vietnam War.
