EPA Chief Scott Pruitt is defending himself against left-wing attacks on his alleged misuse of taxpayer money by calling the recent media reports unfounded.
Pruitt appeared before the Senate Appropriations Committee Wednesday to discuss the EPA’s 2019 budget, bur the hearing quickly turned into a grill session as Democrats demanded answers as to why Pruitt allegedly used taxpayer dollars for first class flights, security detail and office renovations. This included a $43,000 soundproof phone booth.
Pruitt said some of the media reports are highly exaggerated.
“With respect to the phone booth, you mentioned the secure phone line — that was a process that there were not proper controls early to ensure a legal review of the obligation of the agency to inform Congress and GAO,” explained the EPA chief.
Pruitt is currently under investigation for travel costs, pay raises for aides, and retaliation against whistle blowers among other allegations.
