German Chancellor Calls President Trump’s Withdrawal From G7 Summit ‘Depressing’

German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently called President Trump’s withdrawal from the G7 summit “sobering and a bit depressing.”

She made the comments Sunday in an interview after President Trump’s surprise decision to leave the joint statement.

Previously, she had praised President Trump for his frank discussions even though they disagree on certain issues.

However, after a string of tweets from President Trump, Merkel warned the European Union will retaliate to any U.S. tariffs and will work to protect its financial interests.

She said the summit is not the end of the U.S. partnership, but Europe will not rely on Washington.
