The House recently voted to ban the use of plastic straws in their cafeterias to raise environmental awareness.
The vote Thursday was offered by Representative Steve Cohen as an amendment to an energy and water bill set to be passed Friday.
Cohen claimed the vote was an opportunity for the government to show the public they are “environmentally aware.”
There was no objection to the vote and it was quickly passed.
Over 500 million plastic straws are used in America every day, with most ending up in oceans leading to water pollution and killing of marine life.
However, the plastic industry is firing back, claiming the issue stems from non-effective waste management plans.
