The governor of Oregon is declaring a state of emergency after toxins were found in one of the state’s water sources.

The declaration came Thursday after the Oregon Health Authority confirmed low levels of toxic blue-green algae in the Detroit lake.

Residents are advised to avoid drinking tap water — especially children under six, expecting mothers, and people with weakened immune systems.

The National Guard has been called in to set up water stations and distribute clean drinking water.

Health officials say the toxins can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially organ damage.

As of now it is unclear when the advisory will be lifted.
