President Trump concluded his G7 meetings, declaring the U.S. has been taken advantage of for decades on trade, and assured that all of the involved countries are much more committed to fair trade with America.
The president suggested the idea of ending all tariffs on trade barriers between the U.S. and its G7 allies.
On Saturday, President Trump confirmed reports he offered the proposal at the end of the trade meeting Friday.
Before departing the summit for Singapore, the president said ‘we should at least consider no tariffs, no barriers, scrapping all of it.’
Officials at the meeting said German Chancellor Angela Merkel responded positively to the suggestion, saying ‘we’ll take it as a starting point.’
During the press conference, the president lamented the country has lost $817 billion on trade deals involving the past administration, but was optimistic for reciprocal trade relationships in the future.
He added Russia should be re-invited to the trade group, and said the U.S. relationship with the coalition is ‘great’, unlike false portrayals by the ‘fake news media.’
