Republicans in Virginia are tapping a former Air Force officer and craft distillery owner to replace retiring Representative Tom Garrett.

On Sunday, multiple news outlets reported Denver Riggleman is the Republican nominee to compete for Virginia’s fifth congressional seat.

The decision was made during a Republican committee meeting on Saturday.

He will now face-off against Democrat Leslie Cockburn in the November election.

His bid comes after Representative Garrett announced he’d be retiring to seek treatment for alcoholism.

“The tragedy is any person, Republican or Democrat, who’s known me for any time knows two things — I am a good man and I am an alcoholic, this is the hardest statement I’ve ever had to make by far and it’s also the truth,” stated Garrett.

Republicans have held the 5th congressional seat since 2010.

If elected, Riggleman would join the House Freedom Caucus, which Garrett is currently a member of.
