A Mexican crime reporter has become the 10th journalist to be killed in the country this year. Jose Guadalupe Chan Dzib was gunned down at a bar in Playa del Carmen last week.
In the past, the deaths of journalists have been linked to the government or organized crime in an attempt to silence the press. However, many of the murders in Mexico remain unsolved.
Citizens are now calling on the new president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to bring an end to this violence.
In 2017 Mexico was the most dangerous country for journalists outside of active war zones, with at least 32 deaths recorded since 2016.
The deaths have also drawn the attention of the United Nations, which referred to the murders as a “profound crisis of safety.”
