A federal judge in New York is giving the ‘okay’ for a lawsuit challenging the census citizenship question to move forward.
On Tuesday, the judge accused the Commerce Department of acting in “bad faith” for reinstating the question on the nationwide survey in 2020.
The ruling requires the department to hand over documents related to its decision.
Critics worry the question could discourage immigrants from taking part in the census, possibly leading to a major undercount.
However, the White House said the question is necessary to protect voters and to better comply with the Voting Rights Act.
