Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. is speaking out on the upcoming summit between President Trump and his Russian counterpart.
According to Russian envoy to the U.S. Anatoly Antonov, the upcoming summit will help boost bilateral relations between the two superpowers.
Antonov shared his high hopes about the meeting in an RT interview that aired Tuesday.
He still discussed some areas of disagreement with the U.S., including President Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran Nuclear Deal.
“We can see it is a great mistake,” said Antonov. “It is very easy to ruin something, but it is rather difficult to create something special.”
The Russian envoy is pushing the U.S. government to take a new approach to its treatment of Russia.
“What we want from the United States — we want just only respect of our national interest,” he stated. “You said that if you treat us as equal partner, if you try to understand that it is a possibility for you to speak with us not just only from the position of force, we will find solution on every issue.”
Antonov openly admitted there are tensions between the two governments, but also pointed out Russian and American people still participate in cultural exchanges that could help improve relations.
“Even taking into account this bad shape of Russian-American relations, we have excellent relation between people-to-people,” he commented. “Do not forget about the cultural relations.”
Despite these tensions, the ambassador believes the two nations can find common ground in international conflicts.
The two presidents will meet in Helsinki on Monday, July 16 for another major summit of this administration.
