Michael Cohen’s attorney Lanny Davis lands in hot water after admitting he was the anonymous source behind a CNN report claiming the president had prior knowledge of a controversial 2016 Trump tower meeting.
On Monday, Davis told Buzzfeed News — “I made a mistake” — after he appeared to back-peddle on the story during an interview on CNN last week.
The lawmaker appeared to change his story following Cohen’s guilty pleas, saying he “could not independently confirm” the president had knowledge of the supposed meeting between his son and a Russian lawyer. He followed up, saying he “regretted his error.”
Other legal experts on Capitol Hill have questioned where Davis’ loyalties lie in the past, calling him a long-time Clinton loyalist after having served as the White House special counsel during the Clinton administration.
Former Utah Representative Jason Chafetz also called Davis’ involvement “suspicious” after the lawyer recently released a book entitled — “The Unmaking of the President 2016: How FBI Director James Comey Cost Hillary Clinton the Presidency.”
This comes after Davis claimed he and Cohen “were not the source of the story” during the same Buzzfeed interview.
Critics have slammed CNN following the report as the network initially reported Davis had “declined to comment on the story.”
Cohen’s sentencing is due to be finalized later this year in December.
