French President Emmanuel Macron is calling for increased defense in an effort to enhance European security.
Macron made the remarks during a speech Monday, saying the EU should not rely on the U.S. for its security or defense initiatives.
The French president said the defense dialogue should include all European nations and Russia, assuming progress is made regarding its involvement in Ukraine.
Macron added, its the European nations’ responsibility to ensure security for its citizens.
“This reinforced solidarity will imply to revisit the European architecture of defense and security, by initiating a renovated dialogue on cybersecurity, chemical weapons, conventional weaponry, territorial conflicts, space security, the protection of the polar zones, in particular with Russia,” stated the French President.
Macron has previously pushed for a more unified European Union and a common defense budget.
