A new poll shows Florida Congressman Ron Desantis is leading his primary challenger by a wide margin in his bid for the Republican Party’s nomination.
The survey released by North Star Opinion Research Wednesday found 50-percent of likely voters support Desantis in the upcoming gubernatorial primary. In comparison, just 30-percent of respondents support his opponent Adam Putnam.
The competition between the two Republicans has escalated recently, with the Putnam campaign running negative TV ads against Desantis.
However, President Trump’s endorsement of Desantis during a recent rally likely helped boost his popular support in the face of political attacks.
Desantis hopes to take over for outgoing Governor Rick Scott, who is now running to unseat Democrat Senator Bill Nelson.
The state’s primary elections will be held on Tuesday, August 28.
