The Coast Guard assisted in the rescue of more than a dozen people from a burning fishing boat near San Diego.
According to reports, 15 people were pulled from the water Saturday by the crew of a chartered fishing boat near the burning vessel.
The Coast Guard said two people were severely burned and were flown to an area hospital.
Officials said air rescues are always risky maneuvers.
“The hoisting is definitely the most critical portion, just because you’re in a low-hover over the water — there’s kind of a lot that can go wrong, somebody’s outside of the helicopter and that’s why we talk about all of our evolutions before we actually do them,” explained one Coast Guardsman.
Three people are still reported missing from the burning boat, while the remaining 13 survivors were taken back to Mexico.
The Mexican Navy has since taken over search efforts.
