A gunman opens fire at a Chicago-area hospital, killing a Chicago police officer and injuring three other individuals.
Gunshots rang-out around 3:30 p.m. local time today at Chicago Mercy Hospital located in the city’s south-side.
The suspected gunman is dead, although it’s unknown whether he was killed, or died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, local reports are now saying.
The injured officer was transported to another hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries.
Witnesses claim to have heard a series of five or six gunshots as the scene broke out, prompting the Mercy Hospital to declare a “code silver,” similar to a lock down procedure.
The hospital has since secured the facility, it announced in a tweet later in the day.
