Chaos followed terror in Chicago as shots rang out at a local hospital. Officers responded to the city’s South Side Monday afternoon after reports came in that 32-year-old Juan Lopez got into a fight with his ex-fiancée in Mercy Hospital’s parking lot.
When authorities arrived they found Lopez had fatally shot Dr. Tamara O’Neal. Lopez then fled into the hospital, where he continued his rampage.
“It was chaos. It was just mass chaos. Once he entered, he just started shooting random.” — James Gray, witness
Police engaged with Lopez inside the hospital’s lobby. However, during that exchange officials said Lopez shot and killed pharmacy resident Dayna Less and Officer Samuel Jimenez.
The gunman was later found with a fatal gunshot wound to his head.
The city and its police force are now mourning the loss of the victims, and are praising authorities for putting their quick response.
“The city of Chicago lost a doctor, pharmaceutical assistant and a police officer, all going about their day, all doing what they loved — this tears at the soul of our city,” stated Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that all those officers that responded were heroes, and they saved a lot of lives, because we just don’t know how much damage he was prepared to do,” said Eddie Johnson, superintendent for the Chicago Police Department.
Authorities have determined the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute between the gunman and his ex-fiancée.
Officials from Mercy Hospital have confirmed patients are safe and the hospital is secured.
