Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker is calling for a District Court judge to be suspended from hearing cases, while she remains under investigation.
While speaking to reporters Monday, Baker explained how the evidence against Judge Shelley Joseph is consistent with obstruction of justice.
This comes after transcripts from a court hearing in April recently resurfaced, reportedly showing Joseph conspiring with the defense attorney to help an illegal alien flee the courtroom.
Joseph allegedly allowed the suspect to escape through the back door and scale a fence to avoid running into an ICE agent in the courthouse. She then demanded the court recorder stop transcribing the conversation.
“I find the story as its currently being presented extremely troubling,” said Governor Baker. “Look, judges are not supposed to be in the business of obstructing justice — as far as I can tell based on the facts as they were presented, she clearly violated the court’s own policies with respect to the way they are supposed to handle detainers that involve federal immigration enforcement.”
Judge Joseph is under investigation for possibly breaking two court policies. The first by hindering the efforts of federal agents, and the second by stopping the court recorder.
