In only his second speech since taking office, the head of the UK’s spy agency warned Russia not to meddle with the west.
British Intelligence Service MI6 spymaster Alex Younger made the comments Monday, accusing Russia of having a “perpetual confrontation” with the west.
The only other time Younger has spoken out was in December 2016, where he warned of possible foreign election interference before news broke that Russia had meddled in the 2016 presidential election.
He is now calling on the UK to rely on its allies in the fight against Russian meddling had is urging others to not to stoop to its level.
“One of the most egregious examples of this was the attack in Salisbury in which the Russian state used a military-grade chemical weapon on UK soil,” stated Younger. “We did not respond to this flagrant hostile act by emulating Russian tactics, instead, we operationalized our values, our legal system and our alliances.”
He also claimed the UK is in a technological arms race with its enemies, including China, and raised questions over China’s role in Britain’s communications sector.
